5G NR Transport Block Size (TBS) Calculation | 5G NR TBS Determination Procedure
The following paragraph covers 5G NR TBS determination procedure including formula or equations are used in 5G NR TBS calculation.
➤Step-1: In the 5G NR standard there are three tables 5.1.3.1-1, 5.1.3.1-2 and 5.1.3.1-3 which gives modulation order (Qm) and target code rate (R) based on MCS Index (IMCS). In the calculator we will be taking Qm and R directly for TBS calculation.
➤Step-2: NRE is determined based on N'RE and nPRB. Here N'RE is the number of REs allocated for PDSCH within a PRB (physical resource block). We will be taking NRE directly for TBS calculator.
➤Step-3: First calculate Ninfo from NRE, R, Qm and v and use following procedure used for TBS (Transport Block Size) determination. For Ninfo <=3824 follow procedure-1 (Step-3 in the pdf document) and Ninfo > 3824 follow procedure-2 (Step-4 in the pdf document).

Calculator is based on 3GPP 38.214 communication standards and allows you to calculate TBS depends on MCS (Modulation order, code rate), number of used PRB etc. Modulation Order and Code Rate are determined by tables: 38.214 Table 5.1.3.1-1 and Table 5.1.3.1-2. (depends on DCI, C-RNTI, MCS indexs).
Approximately TBS can be calculated using the formulas from 3GPP 38.214 chapter 5.1.3.2, where Ninfo – number of information bits:
